Giving The Gift Of Massage Therapy

by Corey Proffitt on 12/01/13

It is that time of the year again.  It's that awful, pesky, annoying stressful but yet absolutely wonderful and amazing season of Christmas.  And everyone knows that Christmas is all about giving.  We believe that the most perfect gift this season would be the gift of relaxation.  Yes!  Give someone the gift of massage therapy.  Now some people erroneously equate massage therapy for well to do young ladies that don't have anything to do during the day but go to the spa and get a massage while getting pretty.  That simply is not true!  And some people believe that a massage is something that a woman would buy for her best friend or a man would buy for a girlfriend or partner.  That is so very limited.  Here is a list of people that deserve a massage and would absolutely love to have one.

Your boss:   It doesn't matter if your boss is male or female.  It doesn't matter if they are a wonderful boss or the incarnation of Hitler. Being a boss is stressful.  And your boss, believe it or not, takes care of you.  A little relaxation therapy can go a long way.  And if your boss is the raging incarnation of Hitler, wouldn't you rather have them relaxed?

Your Nana:   Your Nana has taken care of at least two generations of kids.   In some cases, they may have taken care of three.  They have burped babies, cooked holiday meals, cleaned and loved you.  Chances are, especially if your Nana is older, she could have issues like arthritis and back pain.  A massage will make her comfortable and happy and she will love you for it!

Your Grandfather:   Your grandfather has also taken care of more than one generation of children.  He most likely has been a provider and worked very hard to care for his family.  It doesn't matter if he has sat behind a desk his entire life or he has been a stone cutter.  Providing him with some relaxation is a gift of respect and he will cherish it.

Your Parents:   They were there when you fell off your bike or gotten your heart broken for the first time.  They are the two people who will love you like none other.  They have been through all of your ups and downs and whether you understand this or not, your ups and downs hurt them twice as much as it hurt you or made them twice as happy.  So giving them a gift of a good massage is a good way to give back.

And most importantly, yourself!  You are busy working and running around this holiday season trying to make sure that everyone is happy.  You are hiding and wrapping presents so the babies won't see them.  You are stressing out over buying the perfect present for your wife.  There is traffic, short tempered sales clerks, long checkout lines and people who can't park.  The holiday season is full of stress and uncertainty.  And you are in the thick of it.  So wouldn't a good relaxing massage be exactly what is needed for you?

It doesn't matter if you give the gift of massage to yourself or a loved one.  A gift of relaxation is thoughtful and the person will remember it long after you have gifted it to them.   Buying a gift certificate for a massage is an act of love whether it is for you or a loved one.  And don't the people who love and care for you in life deserve the gift of relaxation?

Choosing The Right Massage Therapist

by Corey Proffitt on 11/26/13

By Corey Proffitt

Choosing the right massage therapist can be a very important decision for your health.  However, once you find the therapist that offers exactly what you need, it can be life changing.  There are many important factors to consider when choosing your massage therapist.  A few of the most important factors will be covered in the information below.

Massage Therapy

Is The Massage Therapist Licensed?  Most states now require anyone who is practicing massage therapy to be licensed, or at least have a certification.  Training in an accredited school is generally necessary for either option.  The training usually includes general knowledge and hands-on workshops of the most common massage modalities, as well as in-depth courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Kinesiology.  If you are considering a therapist as your own, it is a good idea to ask them about their training and certifications.  Those who have earned the right to legally practice massage will not have a problem informing you of how they obtained it.  In fact, most will proudly go over their education with you.

Does The Massage Therapist Treat Your Specific Condition?  While there are many types of massage therapy that treat general conditions, some modalities are geared more toward specific areas of pain or discomfort.  Perhaps you suffer from sciatic pain.  Some therapists may specialize in treating this specifically, therefore you are likely to get better results from them because of their drive and experience.  Asking a friend or relative, or reading reviews from reputable review sites (such as Google) can often times be helpful in gaining information about how a therapist has helped others.

How Did The Massage Therapist Answer Your Questions?  When you find a therapist that you are considering, sending them an email or speaking with them on the phone can be beneficial in helping determine whether they are a good fit for your needs.  A therapist who is confident in their work will likely ask specific questions about your needs and expectations.  This is generally a sign of a quality therapist.

Always keep in mind that even though there are many Massage Therapists to choose from, your body is your most important possession.  Especially if you are seeking therapeutic massage for a specific medical condition, it is a good idea to ask questions, check reputations and make sure that you are completely comfortable with the therapist you choose.  If you feel apprehensive, try to determine why before moving forward.  Having a therapist that you can trust will allow you to receive more benefit from your bodywork.

Massage Brings You The Relief You Deserve

by Corey Proffitt on 06/03/13

Are you looking for relief from the stress of everyday life, or specific pain within your body?  If so, a therapeutic massage could be just what you're looking for.  A professional massage can provide fast and effective relief from ailments such as:

  • back pain
  • poor circulation
  • osteoarthritis and arthritis pain
  • stress, anxiety and tension
  • insomnia
  • depression and more
In fact, massage therapy is such a safe method of pain relief, many women turn to massage sessions during pregnancy to relieve stress, pain and insomnia caused by pregnancy.

Some people prefer the heat of a hot stone massage for added benefits.

What is a Hot Stone Massage?

Hot stone massages are simply a unique variation on classic massage therapy.  By using smooth, flat stones that are heated up, your massage therapist is able to place them on focal points on the body.  They may also hold the stones in their hand to gently massage different points on the your body.  When the two techniques are combined, the effects are most beneficial.

Hot stone massage therapy is nothing new, it dates all the way back to ancient times as a form of healing.  It has gained popularity here over the past few decades.

What Happens During a Hot Stone Massage Session?

Before the session starts, the massage therapist will take the stones and place them into water that is heated.  The rocks are typically made of basalt, an iron rich mineral that retains heat very well.  Additionally, the rocks are typically smoothed and flattened naturally over the course of years in a river bed.

As the rocks heat, you will lay face down on the massage table.  The massage therapist will typically apply oil to your body before placing the stones on, allowing for the stones to glide naturally over the skin surface and muscles.

Once the stones reach the ideal temperature for the treatment, they are placed on key points of your body.  As the hot stones transfer the heat to the muscles, the body becomes relaxed, allowing the massage therapist to provide deeper pressure into the muscle tissue, if needed.  The therapist will usually take the stones and provide massage to key points of the body directly.  Then, the stones are either replaced or repositioned.

Once the therapist is finished working the posterior side of your body, you will likely be asked to turn over.  The therapist will hold the sheet and blanket to protect your privacy while you turn.  Most sessions last an hour or and hour and a half.

How Do Hot Stones Feel?

Since the hot stones are typically formed in a river bed, they are flat and smooth, about the size of a large egg.  Since the massage therapist take the hot stones in their hand before ever applying them directly to the client's body, they are safe and will not burn you.  However, if the stones feel too warm for you, you should notify your therapist immediately.  Each person has a different heat threshold, so talk with your therapist to determine your own personal ideal temperature.

Should I Get A Massage?

In addition to ailments mentioned above, massage therapy could be great for you if you:

  • always feel cold, or have cold feet or hands
  • feel stressed and need comfort
  • need to relax
  • have poor circulation
  • have tense muscles
  • enjoy heat therapy
Tips For Getting A Massage

Once you've made the decision to get a massage, it's important to keep these things in mind:

  • don't eat a heavy meal prior to your appointment
  • arrive a few minutes early to talk with your therapist about any specific needs or medical conditions
  • relax and get ready for a wonderful experience!
